I opened BMV Racing planning to play for a few minutes just to shake off the sleepiness. About half an hour later I was still sitting there, muttering "just one more run." The game is refreshingly simple. There's nothing to download. Open your browser and you're on the highway.
There's no gas pedal and no brake in this game. Your car runs on its own at over 300 km/h, and your only job is steering. That sounds easy, but with dense traffic constantly switching lanes, every key press becomes a split-second decision.
What I like is that the game rewards people who take risks. Brushing past another vehicle earns close call points and fills your combo meter. The riskier you drive, the higher your score climbs.
Two fingers are all you need.
Rush is worth chasing. Land six close calls in a row and Rush kicks in. While it's active, you can smash through obstacles safely and your points are doubled. I try to resist the urge to swerve around randomly, and instead keep a steady rhythm of tight passes until I hit six.
The opposing lane is a gamble. Driving into the lane where cars come straight at you is dangerous, but it gives you a 1.5x score bonus. I like to borrow that lane for a short stretch when the road ahead looks clear, then slide back to safety.
Emergency vehicles pay off too. If you clear the lane for an emergency vehicle, you get an extra reward. The moment I see flashing lights behind me, I change lanes.
Ramps and trucks let you launch into the air for stunt points. It looks great, but don't get so distracted admiring it that you forget about the car in front of you.
| World | What it feels like |
|---|---|
| Suburbs | Busy roads under constantly shifting skies |
| Metropolis | Packed traffic between towering buildings |
| Desert | Sandstorms and surprise hazards |
| Snowy Peaks | Cold roads and poor visibility |
To me, Desert and Snowy Peaks are noticeably harder. When visibility drops, your reflexes have to be much sharper.
The game offers 14 vehicles: 13 cars and 1 motorbike. Each one has its own gear and abilities, so switching vehicles really changes how you play. You also get 16 paint colors, performance upgrades, missions, and daily gifts to unlock as you go.
Four power-ups show up on the road:
I usually save my Shield for the most crowded stretches.
No. It's an online game, so you play directly in your web browser.
No. The car drives fast on its own and you only control direction.
You need six consecutive close calls.
You get a 1.5x score multiplier, but the risk of a collision is much higher.
14 in total: 13 cars and 1 motorbike.
BMV Racing doesn't need a long tutorial. You'll understand it the moment you start, but to get a high score you'll have to train your driving instincts and take risks at the right moments. If you enjoy short, addictive runs, give it a try and see if I'm wrong.
