About Draw Joust!

That evening, having some free time, I stumbled upon Draw Joust! on an online gaming site and, out of curiosity, clicked to try it. Initially, I thought it was just a fun drawing game to kill time for ten minutes. Unexpectedly, I ended up playing for two hours, losing so badly I couldn't even close the game.

What kept me playing for so long wasn't the graphics or sound, but a strange feeling: I wasn't losing because I played badly, but because I drew badly. Those two things are completely different.

Who Made This Game, And Where Can I Play It?

Draw Joust! is made by AYA Games and published by Voodoo, the same company that released Helix Jump and Aquapark.io. So if you were addicted to those games, the addictive nature of Draw Joust! is similar. The original version was released on iOS in February 2020, and Android two months later. Now, it's easier to install, as many sites allow you to play directly in your browser.

In The First Game, I Drew A Car That Looked Like A Broken-Legged Chair

Not knowing what to draw, I just scribbled a few lines, resulting in a shape that didn't resemble a vehicle at all, more like a chair with a broken leg. I pressed the start button, the car rolled out, and after one collision, it flipped over. I lost.

I tried drawing it exactly the same way again, and still lost. It wasn't until the fifth or tenth game that I realized the problem wasn't luck, but that the car I drew never actually stood upright.

The game doesn't score your drawing; it scores it based on whether the shape you just drew follows normal physics. A high center of gravity will flip over, a narrow base will easily fall, and placing weapons in the wrong place will result in endless punches. It sounds obvious, but you have to lose enough times to understand.

It Wasn't Until The Twenty-Something Game That I Started Winning

After trying various methods, I changed tactics, drawing the car much lower, with a wider base, almost like an ugly, bulky rectangle. Surprisingly, it withstood several consecutive collisions, while the "cool-looking" cars I had drawn earlier all broke in half mid-battle.

From that, I realized something interesting: in this game, visual appeal and playability are two completely separate things. Once, I saw another player draw an extremely clumsy car, almost a lump, yet they won every battle because its center of gravity was incredibly low.

Weapons Aren't Always Fair

As I got more experience, I started paying attention to the weapons. The game has axes, spears, cannons, and swords, each with a completely different play style. One battle, I drew a cannon, secretly thinking I'd surely win, but to my surprise, when I attached it to my flimsy car frame, it overturned before I could even fire a single shot.

Conversely, another time I drew an axe, something I thought was the weakest weapon, but thanks to attaching it correctly to my sturdy car frame, I won quite easily. From that experience, I realized that the strength of a weapon isn't as important as whether it fits the chassis of the vehicle you're carrying. This is hard to grasp just by reading the game description; you have to lose a few matches yourself to truly understand.

Why I Keep Coming Back To Play Despite Countless Losses

What I like about Draw Joust! isn't that it's easy, but that every time I lose, I know exactly why, instead of feeling unfairly treated. The car flips because I drew poorly, not because of lag or AI cheating. That feeling, strangely enough, makes you want to try again immediately instead of getting annoyed and quitting the game.

How To Play, For Those Who Don't Know

OperationsFunctions
Drag mouseDraw the chassis before the match
Drag left/rightControl direction during the match
Left mouseConfirm the drawing, start the match

That's all; the difficulty lies in what shape you come up with, not in your fingers.

Some Questions I Used To Ask Myself When I First Started Playing

Can I play on a computer without installing an app?

Yes, many sites now allow you to play directly in your browser. I prefer this method because I'm too lazy to install anything.

Why does my automobile roll over at the slightest bump?

Probably because the frame is drawn too high or thin. Try to lower it and expand the base it will be lot better.

When you are fresh to the game, are there some weapons that you should steer clear of?

I find cannons the hardest to utilise myself . You need a super solid car frame to be effective . If you are not comfortable with drawing yet, beginners should avoid them.

Even now, when I have some free time, I still open Draw Joust! and build some new cars. Not because I want to win that bad, but more because I want to see if my oddball ideas make it past the first round. Maybe it is this curiosity that keeps players playing the longest, not winning or losing.
