I used to think typing games were boring. Then one free evening I opened Turbo Type 3D just to see what it was about. Two hours later I was still sitting there, trying to keep my clean-typing streak alive so I could trigger Turbo and overtake a rival. This article covers what I learned after many sessions.
Turbo Type 3D is an online game. There is nothing to download or install. Just open the game page, click play and start typing. Even a low-spec computer runs it fine, as long as you have a keyboard.
The rules are simple. Every correct character pushes your car forward. A wrong key makes the car stall until you fix it. The X keys deletes the wrong character and unlocks your car.
Two things hooked me. The first is Turbo: type 25 clean keystrokes in a row, then press Tab to burst ahead. The second is drafting behind a rival with the Right Arrow key to get extra speed. Many typing race games make your car's speed depend on how well you type. In this kind of game, players get a passage to type, and the longer and more complex the passage usually, the more it pushes you to improve. Turbo Type 3D adds Turbo and drafting on top, which makes the races far more tactical.

| Mode | Highlights | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Race | Race four rivals, with Turbo and drafting | Beginners |
| Daily Race | Shared daily score, coin rewards | Leaderboard chasers |
| Rookie Cup | Four races, cup points | Players who want a longer goal |
| Pro Cup | Faster rivals, harder text | Confident typists |
| Time Trial | Race your own ghost, chase medals | Those who love beating their own record |
| Pro Race | Long lines with capitals, numbers, quotes | Players who want real-world typing practice |
| Practice | Focus on keys you often get wrong | Anyone fixing bad habits |
I usually start with Practice to warm up, then move on to Time Trial. Racing against my own ghost is stressful and addictive at the same time.
The game has six backgrounds: Green Hills, Canyon, Snow Peak, City, Volcano and Moon Base. The constantly changing scenery keeps me from getting bored even though I'm typing over and over. The Moon Base track is my favorite.
After each race, your finishing position decides how many coins you earn. You spend coins on cars in the garage, which has 32 Common, 18 Rare, 15 Epic and 7 Legendary vehicles. You can also change paint jobs and upgrade parts. The 27 achievements reward experience and coins too, so there is always a goal to chase when you play for a long time.
No. You play directly in your browser.
Yes. Practice mode focuses on the keys you often get wrong, so the improvement is quite noticeable.
Race or Practice. Once you're comfortable, try Rookie Cup.
The X key, because it fixes mistakes and unlocks your car right away.
If you want to practice typing without feeling like you're studying, give Turbo Type 3D a try. I came in for fun and left with a faster typing speed.
