About GTA 2

Honestly, when I first played GTA 2, I found it boring. The top-down perspective, basic graphics, everything looked outdated. But the more I played, the more I understood. This game isn't old-fashioned. It's just... different. Completely different from the GTA games I know.

Why GTA 2 Shouldn't Be Forgotten

I came to GTA 2 with high expectations because of its name. But instead of an epic story with some main character, I got dropped into Anywhere City and... silence. Nobody told me what to do. I could go anywhere I wanted, steal any car I felt like, work for whoever I chose. That's the real appeal.

The gang respect system actually forced me to think strategically. If I kept running jobs for the Zaibatsu, the Salvatore crew would eventually see me as an enemy. They'd attack me on the streets. And I could only play both sides for so long. The feeling of being hunted, of knowing they're waiting for me out there—I don't even know how to describe it properly. It made every time I stepped outside feel tense.

How the Game Actually Works

The city is split into three areas: Downtown, Residential, and Industrial. For each zone, I had to play long enough, do enough jobs, and earn enough points to move to the next one.

Jobs are simple. I find colored phones scattered around the city, each color linked to a different gang. Pick one up and accept a mission. Sometimes it's stealing a car, sometimes it's taking someone out, or driving somewhere fast. Complete the job, get paid, and gain respect with that gang. Higher respect means tougher jobs and bigger payouts.

The cops are relentless too. Cause too much chaos and they show up. Then I have to run. A fast car or just laying low for a few minutes makes them forget about me. But if I keep shooting, my wanted level climbs and things get messy.

The Strategy Behind It All

I figured out pretty quickly that you can't make everyone happy. If I want to progress fast, I have to pick a side. But picking one means the others become hostile. So the real strategy is: work mainly for one gang, but occasionally help another gang here and there to keep the peace.

Controls And Music

The controls are straightforward too. Arrow keys to move. Ctrl to shoot. Space to jump or slide under a car. When driving, arrow keys steer and space uses the handbrake. Anyone can jump in and play without reading a massive manual.

And the music? Don't get me started. Each area and situation has its own soundtrack. I press F5 to change radio stations. Those little details hook you into the game in a weird way.

GTA 2 Compared to GTA and GTA 6

Looking back at these three games, I see they're completely different animals.

The original GTA was classic but basic. GTA 2 upgraded that idea with the respect system. GTA 6 went all-in on story and graphics, but honestly I feel more restricted. You're not really "free" the way you think you are.

What I Love About GTA 2

It's hilarious. The game knows exactly what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. It's not trying to teach me about society or make me listen to long-winded dialogue about life. It's just: steal a car, run from the cops, work for bad guys. That's it.

Replaying it never gets old. Each time I can choose a different direction. Pick a different gang, try different missions, escape the cops in new ways. Never feels like a paint-by-numbers experience like modern games sometimes do.

Questions People Usually Ask Me

What makes GTA 2 special?

The gang system. Other games have gangs, but none punish you this hard when you work for their rivals.

Where do I start?

Find a phone on the street. Do jobs, earn money, build respect. Rinse and repeat until you move to the next zone.

Is it fun for the long haul?

Depends, really. If you like arcade gameplay, then yeah. If you only care about story and characters, you'll probably get bored.

How does it stack up against GTA 6?

GTA 6 is better in graphics and story. But GTA 2 is freer. Pick what you actually want.

The Bottom Line

I played GTA 2 and was genuinely surprised at how good it is. It's an old game but doesn't feel ancient. It's just different. If you like arcade games, if you like real freedom, if you're tired of someone constantly telling you what to do next, then GTA 2 is for you. I'd recommend it.
